The Best Cupcakes In Manila

The Best Cupcakes In Manila It has been years since cupcakes first hit Manila. And Best Food In Town has not been the sort of blog to breathlessly cover every new cup cake shops in the city. But then again, we realized that when asked where to find the best cupcakes in Manila, we didn’t have the answer :). And that just would not do.

So we took the initiative to track down Manila’s best. Honestly, I didn’t quite know what we were getting ourselves into. And we soon found ourselves in charge of what seems to be the most epic taste test ever attempted.

  • Texture
  • Frosting
  • Flavor
  • Price
  • Overall Appeal

1st Round

Overall, we tried 30+ cupcakes from 11 bakeries over the course of a few weeks. Here’s the full list of bakeries that we have tried ( in no particular order):

  • Cupcakes by Sonja
  • Goodies ‘n’ Sweets
  • Poco Deli
  • Slice
  • Sophie’s Mom
  • Pastry-Rific
  • Parvati
  • Park Avenue
  • Baker’s Fresh
  • UCC Cafe Terrace
  • Karen’s Kitchen

In case you’re wondering, I kept a record in a spreadsheet of all the bakeries, cupcakes tasted, cost per cupcake, and notes about them. Quite nerdy eh? I call it, deliciously informative.

We have narrowed down our options. So we chose our top 5 cupcake sellers/bakeries, whose cupcakes best represented the high quality that we were looking for.

Here’s our top 5 list:

  • Cupcakes by Sonja
  • Karen’s Kitchen
  • Sophie’s Mom
  • Pastry-Rific
  • Park Avenue

For our final cupcake taste test, we chose 2 flavours from each of our top 5 bakeries—a red velvet and a chocolate with frosting (if available)

For every bakery, we (me and my wife) rated each cupcake on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being repulsive; 5 being revelatory); at the end, we all selected our favourite red velvet cupcake, chocolate cupcake, and overall bakery.

Best Cupcake In Manila – The Verdict

This category was a tough one. All top 5 bakeries offer great tasting cupcakes, leaving our final decision almost a toss-up. But Cupcakes By Sonja stood out among all the contenders for their price, good cake-to-frosting ratio, and quite interesting flavours. Cupcakes by Sonja’s  Red Velvet (our best red velvet cupcake also) is the best! Their red velvet cupcake is called the Red Velvet Vixen (P78) – a perfectly baked dark red cake with creamy cream cheese frosting that’s lightly dusted with cocoa powder. It really tastes awesome and may be the best choice for those cupcake lovers who worship cream cheese frostings.

Pastry-Rific is our runner up – their Chocolate Chili Cupcake (our best chocolate cupcake also) was amazing! It was one of our overall favorites of the tasting, it has an irresistible creation out of chocolate and spice.  The frosting is KILLER and compliments the cupcakes perfectly.

Come down to BF… You have to try Cielini’s (strawberry cucpake, cheese tarts, plain chocolate cupcake) near Resurrection Church and Aggy’s cupcakes (salted caramel, brazo de mercedes). They’re super cheap (Php50 below) but their cupcakes are just as good! They’re the best kept bakery secrets of BF Homes 🙂 not Larcy’s (though i must say it’s a nice hangout)
